General Information on Zoological Research’s Article Processing Charge (APC)
Zoological Research (ZR) provides all articles in full open access immediately upon publication. All articles are published under Creative Commons Attribution License 4.0 (CC BY 4.0). For manuscripts submitted after 1 August 2021, authors will be required to pay a one-time article processing charge (APC) upon formal manuscript acceptance to cover the costs of peer review administration and management, language editing, professional production of articles in PDF and other formats, dissemination of published papers in various venues, provision of online tools for editors and authors, liaison with abstracting and indexing services, and other customer services.
There are no charges for submission, supplementary data, or unsuccessful articles. Some items (Editorials, Corrections, Addendums, Retractions, Comments, and Invited Contributions) are published free of charge.
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
What are the APC standards?
ZR charges the APC based on pages and figures: 50 USD per page (with or without figures in black & white); for pages containing color figures, a 100 USD surcharge is required per page.
When does the APC become effective?
The APC regulation is effective on all manuscripts submitted from 1 August 2021 (12:00am, China Beijing time).
Who is responsible for making or arranging payment?
The corresponding author of the manuscript is responsible for making or arranging the payment.
When and how should payment be made?
Upon editorial acceptance of an article, the corresponding author will be notified that payment is due. Please note that prompt payment is recommended as we are unable to publish accepted articles until payment has been received.
Accepted methods of payment:
1. Wire transfer in Chinese Yuan (CNY) or US Dollars (USD).
2. Credit card.
For more detailed information on how to pay an invoice, please contact the ZR Editorial Office.
Payment is due within 30 days of the manuscript receiving editorial acceptance. Receipts are available upon request. ZR does not authorize any third party to collect APCs. The Kunming Institute of Zoology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, is the sole service provider and cannot be held liable for actions by third parties.
For wire transfers, we kindly ask the customer to pay the fees of both the sender and recipient banks to ensure ZR receives the full invoiced amount.
Can an APC be waived due to a lack of funds?
ZR will consider individual waiver requests on a case-by-case basis. A waiver request should only be raised during the submission process; those made during the review process or after acceptance will not be considered. A waiver decision will normally be made within three working days.
Is there an APC refund policy?
ZR will refund an APC if an error on our part has resulted in a failure to publish, withdrawal, or to make an article openly available on the platform. An APC will not be refunded when the failures are due to error or misconduct of the author(s). If an author becomes aware of an error in the open access status of an article, the ZR Editorial Office should be contacted immediately. ZR will correct the error within 30 days of publication, otherwise, a full-amount refund of the APC will be offered.
